OIC Secretary-General Celebrates Achievements of Women and Girls in Science and Technology in OIC Members States

International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an annual UN observance that celebrates the achievements and contributions of women and girls in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) on 11 February every year. This day recognizes the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in the scientific community. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) attaches special attention to the promotion and empowerment of women in OIC Member States and to highlighting their contributions in various fields, including science and technology. This is reflected specifically in the resolution on the promotion of women’s education in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, adopted by the 8th session of the Ministerial Conference on the Role of Women in Development in the OIC Member States held in Cairo, the Arab Republic of Egypt, in 2021, as well as in all relevant resolutions adopted at the previous OIC Ministerial Conferences for Women. The resolution supports and encourages OIC Member States to commemorate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

On this special occasion, H. E. Hissein Brahim Taha, Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), called upon Member States and relevant OIC institutions to intensify efforts for full inclusion and recognition for all Women and Girls in Science and technology, highlighting the important role of this factor to ensure sustainable development in OIC Member States.

It is worth mentioning that the International Conference on Women in Islam, which was co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in cooperation and coordination with the OIC General Secretariat, on 6th to 8th November 2023, in Jeddah, has adopted a comprehensive document titled: Jeddah Document of Women in Islam, that covered all women rights in Islam, including their rights for high-quality education and work opportunities in all fields, including the areas of science and technology. The conference also recognized the role of women and girls in science as agents of change and instrumental in the acceleration of progress toward the achievement of SDGs and the development of their societies.
