The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the new Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan agreed to work together for the implementation of the initiatives of the National Unity Government in all political and economic fields. The agreement was reached during the meetings held by OIC Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani with His Excellency President Ashraf Ghani and the Chief Executive Officer of Afghanistan, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, in the capital Kabul on Wednesday 28 January 2015.
During his visit to Afghanistan, which came upon invitation of the new Afghan Government, the Secretary General discussed with the Afghan leadership many political and economic issues in Afghanistan and the region, reaffirming OIC’s readiness to work with the National Unity Government in all fields, and reviewing the advantages which the OIC enjoys, making it an important strategic partner in the next phase.
For his part, the Afghan President underscored the important role of the OIC in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, highlighting the need to activate partnerships between the two parties in the next phase.
In the same vein, the Chief Executive Officer of Afghanistan welcomed any initiative proposed by the OIC in support of Afghanistan.
The Secretary General also met Afghan Foreign Minister, Salahuddine Rabbani, and discussed with him bilateral relations between the OIC and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
In the beginning of his visit, Madani had conveyed his congratulations to the Afghan leadership and listened to the vision and priorities of Afghanistan at this crucial stage under the leadership of the Afghan Government, reaffirming OIC’s continued support to the Afghan people and to the initiative of the National Unity Government on national solidarity.
The two parties agreed to work together to table the issue of the situation and new developments in the Republic of Afghanistan at the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in its session scheduled in May in the capital Kuwait.
The two parties also agreed to promote joint cooperation and develop bilateral relations between the OIC and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
During his visit to Afghanistan, the Secretary General also held a meeting with the Ambassadors of OIC Member States in Kabul, and met a select number of Afghan columnists and journalists.
