Madani Leaves for Iraq Tomorrow Tuesday on Tour Comprising Baghdad, Najaf and Erbil

The Secretary General of the Organisation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani, will visit Iraq on 13 January 2015. The tour which will comprise stops in Baghdad, Najaf and Erbil is part of the Secretary General’s consultations to reflect on ways of coordination and cooperation between the two sides and affirm support for Iraq’s unity and stability. The Secretary General will meet with the President of Iraq H.E. Mr Fouad Masoum, the Prime Minister, Mr Haider al-Abadi, the Vice President, H.E Mr Osama al-Nujaifi, the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, H.E. Dr Salim al-Jabouri and the Foreign Minister H.E. Dr Ibrahim Jaafari, in a series of discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in various fields – political, economic and humanitarian. Madani also intends to visit Najaf to meet with the Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani. He will later proceed to the Iraqi Kurdistan region to meet with H.E. Mr Masoud Barazani, president of the region. He is also expected to meet with the leader of the Yazidi sect. The Secretary General intends to use this intensive visit to Iraq to obtain various points of view in the country and convey a message of support for all the constituents of Iraq. He will affirm the strong support of the OIC for harmony in Iraq, for concerted efforts among all Iraqi constituents towards the country’s unity and cohesion and rejection of all forms of terrorism, extremism and division. The Secretary General will be accompanied on the 3-day visit by Ambassador Hisham Yousef, Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Ambassador Habeeb kabachi from the OIC Department of Political Affairs.
