Sudan President and OIC Secretary General discuss ways to strengthen joint Islamic action

His Excellency Omar Hassan Al-Bashir, President of the Republic of the Sudan, received in the Guest Palace in the capital Khartoum, on Sunday 28 December 2014, the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), His Excellency Iyad Ameen Madani. President Omar Al-Bashir underscored OIC’s importance at the regional and international arenas, commending the efforts of the Secretary General in promoting Islamic solidarity for the service of the peoples of the Ummah which is going through a very sensitive stage in the light of present conflicts most of which are raging in the Muslim world. For his part, the Secretary General highlighted the importance for all Member States to exert consolidated efforts in order to strengthen joint Islamic action and address the major challenges facing the Muslim world in all political, economic, social and cultural fields. In another vein, Madani held a session of official talks with the Sudanese Foreign Minister, Ali Ahmed Karti, at the headquarters of the Ministry. The two parties reviewed areas of bilateral cooperation between the OIC and the Sudan, and exchanged views on the situation in the Muslim world and the arrangements of the next session of the Council of Foreign Ministers due to be held in Kuwait next May. It is worth noting that the Secretary General met Professor Soumaya Abu Kochoua, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and discussed areas of cooperation between the OIC and the Sudan in the domain of education, the importance of making efforts in order to advance higher education in Member States, the exchange of scholarships, and the implementation of the resolutions adopted by the meetings the ministers of higher education of OIC Member States. The Secretary General also held a meeting with the Minister of Finance and National Economy, Dr. Badr- Eddine Mahmoud, in presence of State Minister for Finance and the Governor of the Central Bank of the Sudan. The meeting considered the role of Islamic financing institutions in achieving economic development in OIC Member States, as well as means to develop mechanisms of financing small businesses with a view to eradicating poverty and unemployment in Islamic countries.
