OIC ENCOURAGES ACCESSION TO ISLAMIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURE

Date: 28/11/2014

The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani, advocated for the encouragement of national chambers of OIC Member States to join the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture so that they can play their role in building human capacities for the purpose of employment and entrepreneurship. In his speech to the 20th meeting of the Board of Directors of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture held in Istanbul on 27 November 2014, the Secretary General submitted that increasing membership of the Chamber would facilitate its participation in various projects which the General Secretariat wishes to encourage as a way of supporting the various developmental initiatives of the OIC. Speaking further in the speech read on his behalf by the Assistant Secretary General for Economic Affairs, Ambassador Hameed Opeloyeru, the Secretary General pointed out the importance of intensifying the organisation of Islamic trade fairs and investment fora aimed at boosting intra-trade and economic development among Member States. The Secretary General added that trade fairs were one of the best ways of achieving closer cooperation among various OIC institutions concerned with encouraging trade and private sector matters, and called for coordination among them to organize regular general and specialized fairs and fora. During the meeting, the proposed 2015 draft budget was approved. The meeting also considered the report of the membership and resources enhancement committee which met in Jeddah last June and the summary of the report on future events and activities of the Chamber.
