Niger decorates the Secretary General with Palm Academic for his humanitarian efforts

The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu met with the President of the Republic of Niger HE Issoufou Mahamadou in the capital Niamey yesterday, Monday, 23 December 2013. During the visit to Niger Ihsanoglu inaugurated a number of developmental projects initiated by the OIC in Niger to provide drinking water, irrigation for 240 hectares and agricultural farms for many villages. The Secretary General briefed President Mahamadou about the OIC projects launched and plans to launch in the future as part of its humanitarian efforts in the aftermath of the severe droughts that Niger suffered from a few years ago. Earlier in the day Ihsanoglu toured some of the villages where these projects were implemented and officially inaugurated several of them. Meanwhile, the Secretary General urged President Mahamadou to follow up on the outcome of the OIC donors’ conference it held in Doha, Qatar in May 2007 for Niger to provide assistance and support for the developmental projects. On his part, the President thanked the Secretary General for his efforts in supporting Niger during his term and all the initiatives he undertook to assist it out of its humanitarian crisis and all his other initiatives for the benefit and solidarity of the Islamic Ummah. In this context, the Secretary General was decorated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Bazoum Mohamed with the Officer of Palm Academic of Niger for his great efforts in supporting the country and providing humanitarian and developmental projects that will contribute to its progress and stability, especially in holding the donors’ conference in Doha and following up on its decisions.
