Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, follows with a great deal of sorrow the huge devastation sustained by the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan which caused considerable losses in lives and property. Official sources in the Philippines estimate that over ten thousand people were killed and that many villages sustained considerable damage, with millions of people left homeless. Following this disaster which hit the people of the Philippines, the Secretary General appeals to all OIC member states -at these critical moments- to stand united by the Government and people of the Philippines; calling for the provision of emergency aids to mitigate the consequences of this unprecedented natural disaster. The Secretary General also conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families which lost their relatives and loved ones, and prayed for speedy recovery to the wounded. He urged OIC member states, subsidiary organs, affiliated and specialized institutions, and Islamic charitable organizations to extend all possible relief, medical, humanitarian and financial aids to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines urgently, and to accelerate their delivery to those in need. The Secretary General expressed full readiness to contribute effectively to this noble humanitarian endeavor. The Secretary General instructed the specialized department to take necessary measures promptly to provide urgent assistance to affected people.
