OIC Secretary General Leaves for Djibouti to Participate In the 39th OIC Council of Foreign Ministers’ Conference

The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, will today 12 November 2012 leave for the Republic of Djibouti to participate in the proceedings of the 39th session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) from 15 – 17 November 2012. The thirty-ninth OIC CFM conference being held this year under the theme: Session of Solidarity for Sustainable Development would discuss the situation in Syria, which is at the top of its concerns by considering the successive developments on the ground. It would also discuss ways for Member States to support the UN-Arab League Envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, to stop the bloodshed and address the humanitarian situation in Syria and neighbouring countries. The Djibiuti CFM meeting would also feature a special session on the latest developments in Myanmar, where many Rihingya Muslim villages in Arakhan region came under ethnic cleansing and attacks from Buddhists groups, forcing thousands to flee. This meeting is being held at a time the Secretary General is mobilizing international efforts through the United Nations, working towards a unified Islamic position at the Djibouti meeting. The meeting would also discuss the current situation in Mali and the Sahel and follow up on the recommendations of the Makkah Summit in this regard. The situation in Somalia would also attract the attention of foreign ministers in Djibouti by considering the positive developments. The meeting would consider ways to provide greater support for reconstruction and stability and Somalia. The OIC Council of Foreign Ministers would also address the issue of Palestine and the Arab – Israeli conflict, in terms of following up the General Secretariat’s efforts for mobilizing international support for the Palestinian Authority’s attempts to get international recognition for the State of Palestine at the United Nations. Other issues to be addressed are developments in Al Quds (Jerusalem), the occupied Golan, Israel’s continued occupation of Lebanese territories, and the current status of the Middle East peace process. On another level, the meetings would also witness a special brainstorming session on the Islamic approach to religious dialogue and international relations, with a focus on cases of attacks against the Prophet (Peace be Upon Him), and the role of the General Secretariat in setting out the methodology and mechanism of unifying member States’ positions on the issue. The meeting would witness the ratification of the Rules of Procedure of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), the setting up of new regional offices for the Organisation and of a food security office in Kazakhstan. On humanitarian affairs, the OIC foreign ministers would discuss the humanitarian situation in the Muslim world and the future of humanitarian action in the OIC in the contexts of challenges facing the Muslim world in the regard. A range of other political, economic, cultural and humanitarian issues, among other issues of concern to the Muslim world would also be discussed by the Council of Foreign Ministers.
