OIC Launches an Urgent Appeal to Raise US$ 10 million to save Cyclone-affected People in Bangladesh

The Organization of the Islamic Conference is appealing to all OIC Member States, civil society organizations, philanthropists and all people of good-will to generously contribute to its Relief and Rehabilitation Appeal for the amount of US$ 10 million following the devastating Cyclone (SIDR) that hit Bangladesh on Thursday 15th November, 2007 resulting into loss of lives and widespread destruction in 16 coastal districts. The OIC has so far allocated an amount of US$ 200,000 from the Islamic Solidarity Fund (ISF) towards emergency relief as an emergency response. The 250 kph wind Cyclone SIDR smashed into the Southern coastal area of Bangladesh and has affected more than 1.5 million people who were left homeless and more than 3,000 people confirmed dead. The vicious winds also damaged homes, schools, agricultural produce, including power stations. Roads and bridges were also damaged. It is worth noting that out of the US$10 million solicited, US$4.0 million will be earmarked for relief operation to cater for 50,000 families and US$ 6.0 for rehabilitation process which will benefit 20,000 families including orphans to finance re-establishment of their shelter, replacement of livestock and provision of seeds for agricultural production.
