Historical visit to Tripoli Ihsanoglu meets with Libyan Leaders, signs cooperation Agreement and reiterates support for the New Libya

Professor Ekmelddin Ihsangulu, Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, concluded today Thursday 15th. December 2011, a visit to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, during which he expressed his backup for the new Libyan leadership in the stages ahead and his support for the steps undertaken by the Libyan National Transitional Council, particularly its engagement on the democratic pathway, all in addition to his congratulations extended to the Libyan people in general for the triumph of the 17th. Feb. revolution. The OIC Secretary General met yesterday, Wednesday 14th December 2011, with Mr. Mustafa Abdul Jalil, Chairman of the Libyan National Transitional Council, and reviewed with him the prospects of coordinating relations between Libya and the Orgnaisation of Islamic Cooperation and the possible assistance in favour of Libya's greater involvement in joint Islamic action. During the meeting, Mr. Abdul Jalil reiterated his county's gratitude for the OIC’s stand which he described as having been in the forefront with its support for the Libyan revolution through its historical communiqué, a support which was kept up until the revolution achieved its goals and its victory became a reality. He further expressed his great expectations as to increased cooperation with the OIC in the times ahead. Ihsanoglu, in turn, stressed the organization's continued support to the new Libya, and its revolution. He called on Libyans to rally around this achievement. He also congratulated Mr. Abdul Jalil for his role in leading Libya at this critical juncture. At a press conference held after the meeting, he indicated that he discussed means of extending the assistance which the OIC wishes to offer to Libya in the process of laying the foundations of the constitution and the state of institutions. The Secretary-General also met with the Libyan Prime Minister, Mr. Abdul Raheem Al-Kape, and briefed him on aspects of cooperation that the OIC wishes to engage in through its affiliated institutions. At the conclusion of his   two-day visit, Ihsanoglu met the Libyan Foreign Minister, Ashour Ben Khayal. The two sides signed a cooperation program in a number of areas required by Libya in the near future as it restores the modern state on the basis of democracy, justice and prosperity for the Libyan people. During his visit, the OIC Secretary General had also met members of the Council of Ministers, and the 52 members of the Transitional National Assembly (TNA) at the TNA headquarters at the invitation of the Chairman of the Transitional Council, where he addressed them reiterating the OIC support to Libya, and inviting them to stand united in the face of the challenges confronting their country in the period ahead.
