OIC Secretary General Stresses Lebanese Harmony as Condition for Presidential Election

Date: 19/11/2007

The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has reiterated the need for all Lebanese factions to agree on the election of a new president for the country at the constitutionally stipulated time to save Lebanon and its people from the unknown. He noted that failure of the efforts to achieve national harmony among Lebanese factions to elect a new president for the country, who would serve Lebanese national interest and preserve security and stability for all Lebanese, would not be in the interest of any of the factions. Professor Ihsanoglu expressed his full support for the initiative of His Eminence Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir and the efforts of speaker Nabih Berri and parliamentary member Saad al-Hariri to reach an understanding on the presidential election. The Secretary General also expressed the support of the Organization of the Islamic Conference to Lebanon and its people and for all the ongoing efforts to enable the Lebanese people to elect a new president.
