The Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference is deeply saddened by news of the heavy death toll and large-scale devastation caused by Hurricane SIDR which hit the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on Thursday 15th November 2007. According to early estimates made by the Bangladeshi authorities, over 1,500 people have so far lost their lives in addition to thousands of injured, widespread properties and vital crops destruction in 16 coastal districts. It is also reported that the calamity has caused a total blackout throughout the country following the stoppage of several power stations.
