The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, welcomed the constructive meeting in Cairo between the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and the Head of the Political Office of the Hamas Movement, Mr Khaled Mashal. He underscored the importance of Palestinian national unity in boosting the accomplishments recorded at the international arena, particularly following Palestine accession to full membership of UNESCO, and in following through efforts for membership in the United Nations. The Secretary General noted that internal Palestinian harmony would unify the efforts to achieve the aspirations of the Palestinian people for an end to Israeli occupation and for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital.
