OIC secretary general condemns child kidnapping and sale in western countries and announces the launch of an OIC child protection programme in Darfur

Date: 29/10/2007

The Organization of the Islamic Conference is following with serious concern the details of painful incidents of one of the biggest human trafficking operations involving the transfer to France of displaced under-aged children kidnapped in Darfur and Northern Chad. The official spokesman of the Organization of the Islamic Conference issued a strong condemnation of these operations regarded as blatant violation of international laws, in particular the international Convention on the Rights of the Child. He called on Member States of the Organization and civil society institutions to intervene urgently and to challenge resolutely these schemes being masqueraded as humanitarian work by Western non-governmental organizations, whereas the real intention behind them is to steal these under-aged children from their families, exploit and use them in activities unsuitable for their ages and change their culture and belief. The spokesman further said that the OIC Secretary General, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, would soon launch a programme to protect the children of Darfur, and called for concerted efforts of Member States and civil society institutions to ensure that the objectives of this humanitarian programme are realized.
