The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has warmly welcomed the opening of the peace talks starting from 27 October 2007 in Sirte, Libya, between the Sudanese Government and some of the rebel groups of Darfur region and commended the Sudanese government for its decision by declaring an immediate unilateral ceasefire in Darfur. Ihsanoglu, expressed his concern over the absence of the main leaders of the Sudan Liberation Army Unity (SLA) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) in peace talks and said that their representation in the Libya peace talks would have had fundamental meaning to the settlement of the Darfur conflict. The Secretary General also commended the Libyan leader, Colonel Muammar Qaddafi for his efforts as the honest broker to the peace talks.
