OIC Expresses Solidarity with the Kashmiri People and Stresses Need for Dialogue and Peaceful Negotiations between the Concerned Parties

Date: 06/02/2011

Ambassador Abdullah Alim, Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and Special Representative of the OIC Secretary General to Jammu and Kashmir – expressed the OIC’s full solidarity with the people of Kashmir and its sustained support for their struggle to achieve their full legitimate rights. Amb. Alim underlined the OIC’s steadfast and unequivocal position that the use of violence cannot lead to a permanent solution to the Kashmir conflict and that the real solution resides in dialogue and peaceful negotiations between the concerned parties, including the Kashmiri people. These views were underscored in a statement that Amb. Alim delivered at the annual ceremony organized by the Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in Jeddah on Saturday 5th February 2011, in commemoration of the Day of Solidarity with the Kashmiri people, with the attendance of the Consul General of Pakistan in Jeddah, Mr. Abdul Salik Khan and representatives of the Pakistan and Kashmiri community along with a number of Saudi officials and representatives of the diplomatic corps. Amb. Alim paid tribute to Pakistan for its commitment to the peaceful process and expressed the hope that the Indian Government would manifest its readiness to persue the same path for the benefit of achieving a final and lasting solution to this long-standing conflict. Within the same context, Amb. Alim stressed that this meeting as well as other such events held in support of the Kashmiri people, offer a renewed opportunity to express the OIC’s stand in support of the people of Kashmir. He went on to point out that the OIC has consistently sought to achieve optimal use of such events to highlight the struggle of the Kashmiri people and mobilize wider support and greater solidarity for them at all international fora. Amb. Alim announced that he intends to undertake a visit to the province of Jammu and Kashmir as soon as possible, to express to the Kashmiri people directly the OIC’s support and solidarity and to gain first-hand knowledge of the latest developments in the province. Amb. Alim further added that the Kashmiri people who have endured for so many years the hardships of the conflict and of occupation, deserve indeed to achieve their legitimate rights to self-determination and to live in peace and security, and reiterated also the OIC’s firm belief that a permanent solution to the conflict around this province would provide a boost for regional and international peace and security.
