Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, hailed the Republic of Surinam, an OIC Member State, for its recognition of the State of Palestine, as a free independent state, within the 1967 borders. The Secretary General voiced the view that this step which comes within the framework of increasing international recognition of the State of Palestine, represents a significant and qualitative development in the consolidation of the national, inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost of which their right to establish their independent Palestinian State with Al-Quds Al-Sharif/Jerusalem as its capital. He also reiterated that this falls in line with the resolutions of the international legitimacy and lays the foundations for a pivotal stage in the history of the Palestinian people and their just cause. The OIC Secretary General further expressed his hope that the other states of the world would follow suit and announce their recognition of a free and independent state of Palestine on the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel in 1967, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif/Jerusalem as its capital.
