OIC Secretary General commends the people of Niger for holding peaceful general elections

The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has commended the people of the Republic of Niger for holding a peaceful general election on 31 January 2011. The Secretary General noted that the good turnout of voters, particularly women, was indicative of the commitment of the citizens to return democracy to their country. He also expressed satisfaction that the vote was conducted under free, fair and transparent conditions. Prof. Ihsanoglu exhorted all candidates and their supporters to continue to remain calm and await the outcome of the elections to be released by the legitimate authorities. He urged them to only resort to legal means to seek redress. The OIC team of observers to the general elections was in the country on the invitation of the government of Niger. During its stay in the capital the team met with a number of stakeholders including the Prime Minister, the Independent Electoral Commission and candidates.
