The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has expressed strong condemnation of the criminal bombings that targeted several Shiite processions in East Karbala on Monday 24 January 2011, leaving behind scores of innocent Iraqi casualties. The Secretary General expressed strong disapproval at the continuation these kinds of criminal and destructive practices which have claimed the lives of not less that 159 Iraqis in the spate of one week. He appealed to all Iraqis across sectarian divides to adhere to the 2006 OIC-sponsored Makkah Al Mukarrama Document, which contains the agreement of Iraqi Sunni and Shiite religious leaders and scholars to shun violence and extremism. The Secretary General urged the Iraqi people to unite their ranks and work towards preserving the unity of the country while standing up to terrorist activities targeting the security and stability of Iraq. Ihsanoglu also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured speedy recovery.
