The Third meeting of the Steering Committee on Health held at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah concluded its two days work on 23 January, 2011. The meeting reviewed the status of implementation of the decisions of the Islamic Conferences of Health Ministers (ICHM). Members of the Steering Committee presented reports on actions taken by them in regard to polio eradication, combating malaria and communicable diseases in the OIC countries, tobacco control, vaccine and drug production, mother child health issues as well as cooperation with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria and other international partners. The meeting recommended the ICHM to consider further the issue of establishment of a fully functional ICHM Secretariat and to facilitate better coordination of OIC positions at different international/UN health related fora through OIC Geneva and New York Offices. The meeting finalized the Terms of Reference for the preparation of a Strategic Health Program of Action of the OIC Member States for 2012-2022. This Strategic Health Program of Action will be presented for adoption to the Third Islamic Conference of Health Ministers in Astana in September 2011. The meeting recommended initiation of cooperation in the area of health education, exchange of faculty, scholarships, cooperation and linkages between health centers of excellence, combating drug addiction, cooperation to produce vaccines and drugs and cooperation with regional organizations. The Steering Committee also reviewed arrangements for the Third Islamic Conference of Health Ministers to be hosted by the Government of Kazakhstan in September 2011.
