Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) expressed his hope that the self-determination referendum, started in Southern Sudan on Sunday 9th January 2011, will be conducted in fair, free and in a peaceful atmosphere and that it will be marked by the upholding of law and transparency. He called upon all parties to abide by the principle of full neutrality and impartiality so as to allow the people of Southern Sudan whether living in the South or in the North, to make their free choice in this future-determining referendum for Sudan. The Secretary General paid tribute to both parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement for their commitment to the implementation of the agreement which was concluded in Nifasha and under which the referendum on self-determination is the last item.
