The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof Ekmeleddin Ishsanoglu has welcomed the outcome the one day summit of West Africa leaders held on 24th December 2010 in Abuja, Nigeria. Prof Ihsanoglu who commended the resolute position adopted by the Extraordinary Session of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the crisis in Cote d’Ivoire, a member of the sub-regional grouping, stressed the need for the international community to extend its strong support to ECOWAS to lead in finding ways to resolve the political logjam which also threatens the peace and stability of the region. The Secretary General, while restating his earlier call to former President Laurent Gbagbo to hand over power peacefully and save his country from violence, reaffirmed the preparedness of the OIC to contribute in any initiative that will bring an immediate end to the crisis.
