OIC secretary-general welcomes Mecca Palestinian agreement

Date: 09/02/2007

Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), has welcomed the agreement reached by Fatah and Hamas in Mecca Al-Mukarramah under the auspices of His Majesty the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The agreement notably upholds the sanctity of Palestinian life, provides for the formation of a national unity government and political partnership, and envisages the revitalization of the Palestinian Liberation Movement (PLO). “This auspicious accord comes as the fruition of intensive and dedicated good offices. We are deeply confident that it will reinforce Palestinian national unity, facilitate lifting the unfair sanctions imposed on the Palestinian people, and enable them to safeguard their national achievements, protect their sanctities and holy places, and push ahead towards regaining their inalienable rights to freedom, independence, and the establishment of their independent Palestinian State with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital”, Ihsanoglu said. Consequently, the OIC Secretary-General addressed a Cable of Thanks to His Majesty the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in which he paid a glowing tribute to His Majesty’s gracious role and invitation to the Palestinian parties as well as his magnanimous patronage of this successful Palestinian reconciliation meeting, which has culminated in the Mecca Al-Mukarramah Palestinian National Reconciliation Agreement.
