OIC secretary general in Egypt meeting with President Mubarak

President Mohammad Hosni Mubarak, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt received on Monday afternoon, 5th February 2007 in audiance, at the Presidency in Cairo, the Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu who was on a visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt. Discussions in the meeting focused on the situation in Iraq and in the Middle East region in general as well as on ways to enhance the OIC performance to address the current challenges facing the Arab and Islamic World. Prof. Ihsanoglu briefed President Mubarak on the efforts underway to implement the resolutions of the 2005 Makkah Summit and to update the OIC Charter. Additionally, the Secretary General made a review of the progress achieved in the implementation of the Ten-Year Programme along with the OIC endeavours and activities. Prof. Ekmeleddin expressed his appreciation of and concurrence with the efforts contributed by President Mubarak and by Egypt under his leadership with a view to putting an end to the in-fights between the two Palestinian Movements, Fatah and Hamas. He further noted that the OIC also has an initiative aimed at ending the belligerent actions between the two movements, the restoration of calm in the streets, and the early formation of a national unity Government. The Secretary General also addressed his thanks to Egypt and its Foreign Ministry for their support and fruitful cooperation with the OIC in all spheres. Prof. Ihsanoglu had earlier held two separate meetings with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Mr. Ahmed Abdul Qaidh and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Amr Moussa, and discussed with them the developments regarding issues of concern to the Arab and Islamic world, particularly in Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, Darfour and Somalia. It was agreed to consolidate joint action on a number of these issues which call for a concerted effort to achieve their resolution and to end the tension in the region. The Secretary General emphasized that the prospects of cooperation between the OIC and other international organizations, particularly the League of Arab States, all of whose 22 Member are also members of the OIC, will bear fruit and will be elevated to new horizons. Prof. Ihsanoglu participated in the events of the Cairo International Book Exhibition with one of his works of literature on Turks in Egypt and their cultural heritage. He also participated in a symposium organized on the same occasion to introduce the public to this literary work.
