OIC secretary general expresses outrage and dismay over the carnage at Baghdad marketplace

Date: 04/02/2007

The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has expressed outrage and dismay at the rising number of attacks targeting civilians in Iraq, including yesterday`s shocking explosion in Sadriyah market in Baghdad, killing more than 130 Iraqis and wounding hundreds of people. The Secretary General voiced his particular exasperation that the inhuman attack followed the appeals from the senior and revered Iraqi religious quarters for unity and brotherhood and for rejection of violence, division and sectarianism. While restating the OIC’s previous calls for an end to the senseless carnage in Iraq, the Secretary General appealed strongly to all Iraqi political and religious leaders, at all levels, to take unambiguous stance particularly against the senseless sectarian violence as it will not bring anything other than more pain and misery, and not to give up seeking dialogue and reconciliation as the only way to ensure lasting peace, welfare and security for their country.
