OIC Participates in a High-level Meeting on Rohingya Refugees in Bangkok

Date: 17/10/2023

At the invitation of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) participated on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in the high-level meeting on Rohingya refugees in preparation for the Second Global Refugee Forum to be held in Geneva on December 13-15, 2023.
In the statement delivered on behalf of the OIC General Secretariat, Mr. Mohammed Ali El-Khamlichi pointed out the priority that the issue of the Rohingya Muslim minority refugees in Bangladesh and neighboring countries enjoys in the OIC humanitarian and diplomatic agenda in accordance with the Islamic Summit and the Council of Foreign Ministers Resolutions.
He expressed the OIC concern about the deteriorating humanitarian conditions of refugees. He also highlighted the OIC’s tireless efforts since 2017 to find a radical solution to the plight of this most persecuted Muslim minority in the world, as described by the UN. The OIC is exerting continued efforts to urge Member States and their humanitarian institutions to provide humanitarian and relief support to Rohingya refugees in light of a funding crisis. Furthermore, he stressed the OIC strong commitment to the safe and voluntary return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar, and its determination to continue working with international partners to achieve this goal in line with the relevant OIC and UN resolutions.
He also praised the government and people of Bangladesh and neighboring Member States for hosting more than one million refugees, stressing that diplomatic efforts must go hand in hand with humanitarian efforts to address the root causes of the problem and achieve a lasting solution to the Rohingya crisis in line with relevant OIC resolutions. Finally, he called for improving the refugee conditions in the camps, especially in the areas of health, education, and employment.
