H.E. Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, received, on December 20, 2022, at the Presidential Palace in Nouakchott, H.E. Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in the presence of the Secretary-General of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (ICCIA), Mr. Yousef Khalawi.
Ambassador Tarig Ali Bakheet conveyed a verbal message from the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), H.E. Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, to H.E. the Mauritanian President, in which he expressed appreciation of the sincere efforts made by Mauritania to promote joint Islamic action and inter-Islamic solidarity, including its preparations to host and chair the next session of the Council of Foreign Ministers. He also briefed the Mauritanian President on the General Secretariat’s preparations to hold the CFM meeting.
The Secretary-General stressed, in his oral message, the OIC’s interest in the situation in the Sahel region and the countries of the Lake Chad basin, commending, in this regard, Mauritania’s sincere efforts to achieve security and stability in the region.
The Secretary-General also commended the outcomes of the Forum on Microfinance, kindly hosted by Mauritania, and indicated the General Secretariat’s commitment to follow up on these outcomes, in coordination with the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.
For his part, the Mauritanian President stressed Mauritania’s commitment to supporting the OIC’s efforts to enhance joint action in all fields, and underlined the need to scale up efforts to meet the challenges facing the African Sahel region. He also commended the outcomes of the Forum on Microfinance, and underscored the need to follow up the implementation of these outcomes, including the agreements signed on the sidelines of the Forum.
The meeting was attended by the Mauritanian Minister for Social Affairs, Children and Family, H.E. Ms. Safiya bint Intah, the Director of Staff of the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mr. Ismail OuldCheikh Ahmed, and the President of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the G5 Sahel countries and President of the Mauritanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, Mr. Ahmed Bab Ould Aleh.
