H.E the Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Mr. Hissein Brahim Taha, welcomed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution on the establishment of the United Nations Youth Office adopted during the UNGA’s session on 08 September 2022. The UN Youth Office is to enhance participation and advance youth issues across the United Nations system in the areas of peace, security, sustainable development and human rights, among others.
The OIC Secretary-General indicated that in light of the growing needs of youth all over the world for awakening and for societies based on the principles of peace, justice and equality between men and women, the establishment of this office in the United Nations system will contribute to strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the OIC and its relevant organs and institutions In this regard.
The OIC Secretary-General affirmed the readiness of the OIC and its organs and institutions working in the field of youth capacity-building to cooperate with the newly established United Nations Youth office in order to support the OIC Member States to address the challenges they face in this field.
It is worth noting that the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) established the Youth Unit of the OIC General Secretariat by the resolution adopted at its forty-third session in Tashkent in 2016, in order to coordinate the efforts of the OIC and its relevant organs and institutions in the field of youth development and enhancement their role in development. The Fifth Session of the Islamic Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers (ICYSM) hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 07-09 September 2022 in Jeddah has called on the OIC General Secretariat to strengthen cooperation with international and regional partners in order to enhance the capabilities of youth and empower them in the Member States.
