4 Working Sessions at the OIC Fourth Conference on Mediation

Four working sessions were held at the Fourth Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Mediation "Experiences and Prospects", hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on 5-6 June 2022, in cooperation with the OIC General Secretariat, with the participation of speakers and international experts in the field of mediation.

The first session was held under the title "The Role of the OIC and its Member States in the Field of Mediation" and chaired by Dr. Abdullah bin Musa Al-Tayer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, former Director General of the Cabinet of the OIC and former advisor to the OIC Secretary-General. Speakers at this session were Dr. Mutlaq Al-Qahtani, the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Combating Terrorism and Mediation in Conflict Resolution at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Ambassador Ahmed Abdel Latif, Director General of the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding, Nabil Dabour, Director General of SESRIC, and Ambassador Hassan Ali, Director of the Legal Department of the OIC General Secretariat.

The second session, "Partnerships with International and Regional Organizations", was chaired by Ambassador Faisal Trad, the former ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the European Union, Belgium and Japan. Panellists at this session were Dr. Abdulaziz Hamad Al-Owaishek, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Negotiations Affairs in the Gulf Cooperation Council, Ambassador Khalil Ibrahim Al-Thawadi, Assistant Secretary-General for Arab National Security Affairs at the League of Arab States, Mr. Martin Albani, Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Division of Conflict Resolution and Mediation Support in the European Union, Ambassador Ibrahim Khairat, Special Envoy of the OIC Secretary-General to Myanmar, and Ms. Theresa Whitfield, Director of the Policy and Mediation Division at the United Nations.

The third session "Mediation from a Humanitarian Perspective in the Light of Crises", chaired by Ambassador Tarig Bakhiet, the OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, the Special Envoy of the OIC Secretary-General to Afghanistan. Speakers at this session were Dr. Qutb Mustafa Sano, Secretary-General of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA), Dr. Samer Al-Jutaili, Adviser to the General Supervisor of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), Omar Odeh, head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the GCC Countries, and Dr. Muhammad Al-Asbali, Executive Director of the Islamic Committee of the International Crescent (ICIC).

In the fourth session, "The Way Forward in Mediation", chaired by Ambassador Yousef Al-Dubaie, the OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, the Special Envoy of the OIC Secretary-General for Jammu and Kashmir, panelists were Ambassador Nassirou Bako Arrifari, Special Envoy of the OIC Secretary-General for Africa, Ambassador Gusti Agung Puja, the Executive Director of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, Dr. Sultan Barakat, the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of Conflict and Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Ozkan Doman, Director of the Department of Analysis and Foreign Policy Coordination at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Patrick Duvers of the European Institute of Peace (EIP).
