DOHA, QATAR, 9TH MARCH 2010 His Highness, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Thani Chairman of the Council of OIC Funds, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, It gives me great pleasure to address this august assembly set to review the activities which the Funds have carried out in the field of development under the banner of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, for the benefit of the needy populace across the Islamic Ummah. It is our ardent wish to see these Funds taking great strides forward, in an action oriented manner and continue to make the desired impact. We look forward to direct relations between the Funds and the General Secretariat at the level of the Humanitarian Affairs Department/ICHAD and other departments concerned with their activities, and more contacts between the Funds and authorities in the countries where they are situated, so that they are more visible and be the voice of the OIC. At the same time, much as the Funds are part of the OIC, they have in the past exercised semi-independence from the Organization, especially in the areas of finance, however, after the adoption of the new Charter, the Funds are projected to work under the supervision of the Finance and Administration Department of the General Secretariat and to this end, I will instruct the Director General of Administration and Finance to put in place a new financial system under which the Funds will operate, in line with the OIC Financial rules and regulations, rendering more transparency to their operations, which will also benefit the Funds. I am quite aware that many Funds have constraints in financing their projects. To this end, we will endeavour to mobilize all our resources and I have instructed the Humanitarian Affairs Department/ICHAD to work hand in hand with the Directors of the Funds to make a strong campaign to secure more financial resources for the Funds’ activities. My sincere thanks go to His Highness Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Thani, the Chairman of the Council of Funds for the great work time and dedication he puts at the disposal of the Funds and my gratitude also goes to the various donors, especially the State of Qatar for the tremendous efforts and dedication towards this noble undertaking.
