The Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and the Women’ Development Organization (WDO) co-organized a virtual panel discussion on “Women's Economic Empowerment, Improving Poverty Resilience and Promoting Income Sustainability. Experience of OIC Member States” on the sideline of the 66th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). This virtual event took place on March 17th, 2022.
This event is organized within the framework of the implementation of Resolution No. 7/8-W on “Promoting Women’s Economic Empowerment” adopted at the 8th Session of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Women, held in Cairo, the Arab Republic of Egypt, on 6-8 July 2021. The resolution called on the OIC Member States and the relevant OIC institutions to work together to share views and national experiences in order to benefit from and provide recommendations that can enhance the strategies, legislations, and social policies for the economic empowerment of women and girls in the OIC Member States.
The virtual side event sought to highlight effective and innovative policy approaches to women’s empowerment and its impact on gender justice in OIC countries, recognize practical approaches to promoting gender justice, advance women’s status, socio-economic empowerment, reduce gender gaps, and discuss the best practices within the OIC Member States.
The distinguished panellists consisted of high-level representatives, including HE Dr. Hala Alsaeed, Minister of Planning and Economic Development in Egypt, in addition to the high-level participating panellists from UN Women, ESCWA and IsDB.
The opening session included welcoming remarks from H.E. Dr. Maya Morsy, Chair of the Women National Council in Egypt, Chair of the OIC Women Ministerial Conference, who also moderated the session, opening statement by HE ASG Amb. Tariq Ali Bakheet, the Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, statement by HE Dr. Afnan Alshuaiby, Executive Director of the Women Development Organization, and a statement by HE Amb. Naela Jabr, Chair of the OIC Women Consultative Council.
In his opening remarks, ASG Amb. Tariq Ali Bakheet, stressed that the advancement and empowerment of women are among the key priority areas for the OIC as identified under the OIC-2025 Programme of Action. Similarly, the OIC Plan of Action for the Advancement of Women has renewed the commitment of the OIC Member States, all Institutions within the OIC system, and other stakeholders to working together for a better tomorrow.
