The OIC General Secretariat holds open-ended IGGE meeting on OIC Family Committee's internal and financial regulations

In implementation of Resolution 4/47-C of the 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers held in Niamey, Republic of Niger, in 2020, on the Establishment of the OIC Family Committee, the General Secretariat, in coordination with the Ministry of Family and Social Services of the Republic of Turkey, Chair Country of the OIC Ministerial Conference on Social Development, convened an open-ended Intergovernmental Expert Group meeting to finalize the internal and financial regulations of this Committee. The meeting was conducted virtually from Turkey on 18 October 2021.

The meeting gathered 74 experts from 30 Member States, with the participation of the General Secretariat. Speaking to the audience, the Director General of Turkey’s Ministry of Family and Social Services pointed out that the meeting’s main objective, as established in Resolution 4/47-C, was to finalize the Committee’s internal and financial regulations. He invited participants to engage in constructive and fruitful discussions about the Committee’s draft regulations in a bid for the OIC to play a stronger role in empowering the marriage and family institutions and meet the challenges facing Member States in this domain.

Speaking on behalf of the OIC, Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs, Ambassador Tariq Bakheet credited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for playing host to the first session of the Ministerial Conference dedicated to empowering the institutions of marriage and family held in 2017 in Jeddah. He recalled that the Conference called for an OIC strategy to empower marriage and family institutions throughout the Member States. This Strategy, Amb. Bakheet went on, was approved at the First Ministerial Conference on Social Development held in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey, in December 2019. He also placed on record the General Secretariat’s grateful appreciation to the Republic of Turkey, in its capacity as Chair of the Ministerial Conference on Social Development, for the initiative to submit a resolution to the Council of Foreign Ministers to establish the OIC Family Committee and to convene this meeting.

The Committee’s internal and financial regulations, prepared by Turkey in coordination with the General Secretariat, were subject during the meeting to broad discussionx and constructive input and recommendations from the participants.
