The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has stressed that it is diversifying its presence and role in the Member States, by tackling issues that get it closer to the Muslim individual and the citizen. This is achieved through attentive and diligent efforts exerted by the Organization in tackling the issues of social protection, social equality and welfare for all OIC citizens and peoples, particularly children, the elderly and the handicapped, empowering the marriage and family institution and preserving its values in the Islamic World.
In a statement of the OIC General Secretariat delivered by Amb. Tariq Ali Bakhiet, Assistant Secretary General for Humanitarian, Cultural and Social Affairs at the inaugural session of the Senior Officials Meeting in preparation for the First Ministerial Conference on social Development, held in Istanbul Turkey, on 7 December 2019, the OIC reiterated that attaining social equality is one of the forefront agenda issues which the Member States have sought to address since the establishment of the OIC.
“It is our hope that the convening of a ministerial social affairs session to examine what the Member States have achieved thus far in the area of social development, would constitute a qualitative transition in terms of the OIC’s efforts for enhancement of intra-OIC cooperation in the field,” said Amb. Bakheet.
“Our discussions will be objective and targeted on the challenges which stand in the way of achieving social equality and welfare for all in the Member States,” he added.
The 1st Ministerial Conference on Social Development is convened within the framework of implementing the decisions of the OIC Summit and the Council of Foreign Ministers, which have called for holding the Sectorial Ministerial Meeting on Social Development.
