OIC Symposium on Achieving SDGs from a Family Perspective Proposes Recommendations to Face the Challenges

The symposium on "Specific measures and indicators for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) from a family perspective in Member States", organized by the General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor and Social Development (Saudi Arabia's Family Affairs Council), concluded on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 in Jeddah, by elaborating a joint paper containing some recommendations to empower the family and face economic, social and cultural challenges. The paper will be presented at the Conference of Ministers of Social Affairs to be held in Turkey next year.

The seminar was opened on Monday, 10 December 2018, in the presence of the Secretary General of the Family Affairs Council, Dr. Hala Tuwaijri, the OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Cultural, Humanitarian and Family Affairs, Ambassador Hisham Yousef, and representatives of Member States.

At the outset, Dr. Hala Al-Tuwaijri delivered a statement in which she reviewed the challenges facing the family in light of economic and social changes, stressing the values of the institution of marriage and family and strengthening cooperation mechanisms between the OIC and the international institutions and organizations responsible for family, women and children.

Ambassador Hisham delivered the statement of the General Secretariat in which he stressed that the family is considered as the main factor for achieving social security and sustainable development. He also stressed the importance of taking into account the fundamental role played by the family in development policies.

Participating in the seminar, in addition to the OIC General Secretariat and the Council for Family Affairs in Saudi Arabia, were experts from Member States, members of the Ministerial Committee of the First Ministerial Conference on the Family and Marriage Institution, and the relevant OIC organs and institutions, including the Independent Permanent Commission for Human Rights, ISESCO, the International Islamic Fiqh Academy, IRCICA, the Islamic Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, the Islamic Center for the Development of Trade, the International Islamic University of Malaysia, the Islamic Solidarity Fund, the Islamic Broadcasting Union (IBU), the Union of OIC News Agencies (UNA), and some partner organizations such as the Arab Family Organization, the League of Arab States, the African Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
