Addressing how to achieve self-reliance on medicines and vaccines in OIC Member States will be discussed in the Republic of Indonesia which is hosting the First Meeting of the Heads of National Medicine Regulatory Authorities (NMRAs) on 21-22 November 2018 in Jakarta.
The meeting with the theme “Strengthening collaboration amongst the OIC NMRAs towards self-reliance of medicines and vaccines” will provide a unique platform for NMRAs from the OIC Member States to exchange views, experiences and best practices in tackling the challenges of drug regulations.
“Many developing countries, including some OIC Member States, suffer from high burden of diseases, low manufacturing capacity and weak medicines regulatory systems,” said Amb. Muhammad Naeem Khan, OIC Assistant Secretary General for Science & Technology.
“To this end, the OIC General Secretariat and relevant OIC institutions have been actively involved in various activities to promote drug regulation and self-reliance in OIC member countries,” he added.
The Jakarta meeting which will be the first of its kind, will come up with recommendations on how best to address the problems of medicines regulation in OIC Member States, and develop strategies and steps to expedite self-reliance in the production and access to assured quality, safe, and efficacious medicines as well as vaccines in the OIC Member Countries.
The meeting, which will also be attended by delegates from the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Islamic Development Bank and leading vaccines and medicine manufacturers, is expected to adopt an OIC Action Plan to Promote Collaboration among OIC NMRAS for Self-reliance in Medicines and Vaccines 2019-2021.
