The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will hold in coordination with the Islamic Development Bank and the Statistical Economic and social Research and Training Centre Of Islamic Countries (SESRIC), a workshop to build the capacity of national institutions for the advancement and empowerment of women on 17-18 December 2017 at the headquarters of the General Secretariat in Jeddah.
The workshop is held in the framework of the monitoring of the implementation of the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Women and the resolutions issued by the forty fourth session of the Council of Foreign Ministers on the implementation of the OIC plan of Action for the Advancement of Women (OPAAW) and strengthening the capacities of national institutions for the advancement of women in the Member States.
This workshop will be attended by the representatives of the National Institutions tasked with the advancement of Women within the State Members as well as the OIC organs and institutions, and other Organisations partner with OIC in this field. Presentations will be viewed on the issue of women 's empowerment as a prerequisite for the achievement of sustainable development goals, and how to link OPAAW to sustainable development goals. Also to be presented are guidelines for the standardization of reports that will be submitted to the General Secretariat of the OIC on the activities of the parties involved in the Member States and in the OIC organs and institutions for their contribution to the implementation of the plan of action. In addition, the participants will review the opportunities offered by the relevant OIC institutions to the national institutions and the issue of financing women's empowerment projects.
The meeting is expected to reach practical recommendations and solutions that would help activate the OPAAW’s implementation, enhance the OIC role in the field of women’s empowerment, and develop effective mechanisms to provide information relating to the implementation of the plan. This would enable OIC to address multidimensional challenges women are confronted with, especially in conflict and war zones, and strengthen the partnership and cooperation between Member States in the field of women’s empowerment, as well as the role of civil society to overcome the obstacles that hinder women’s empowerment in Member States.
