OIC Secretary General Meets Member States Ambassadors in Rome

Date: 02/12/2017

The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen, met with the ambassadors of the OIC Member States in Rome on the occasion of his participation in the Mediterranean Dialogues Conference. Al-Othaimeen stressed that his participation as a speaker in this year's edition of the Mediterranean Dialogues was an opportunity to highlight the contemporary trans-border challenges facing the international community, including issues of national security, terrorism, violent extremism, radicalization, poverty alleviation, disease control, environmental degradation, water and food security, and the like.

Al-Othaimeen added that the OIC adopts a principled position against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, committed by whomsoever and wherever and rejects all attempts to attribute it to any country, race, religion, culture or nationality. The OIC also believes that violent extremism cannot be tackled by security or military means alone and that due attention, analysis and concrete plans of action must address the multifaceted dimensions of this phenomenon. He mentioned in the same vein the efforts of the OIC Messaging Center (Voice of Wisdom) to counter the extremist narrative and the efforts of the Islamophobia Observatory to combat this serious phenomenon.

During the meeting, the Secretary General reviewed the OIC’s efforts to support and defend the interests of Muslim Minorities living in different countries in Europe, by making use of its comparative advantages to act as a bridge between Muslims in Europe and their respective governments with a view to promoting the voices of moderation and modernization and spreading the noble and lofty values of Islam. A contact group was established in this regard to follow up their situation.
