OIC Condemns Terrorist Attack on University of Maiduguri, Nigeria

Date: 17/01/2017

The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned the terrorist attack which targeted a mosque at the University of Maiduguri in northeast Nigeria on Monday 16 January 2107. The attack, claimed by Boko Haram, left a number of people dead, including a prominent university professor, and others injured.

OIC Secretary General Dr Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen described the bomb attack as deplorable, targeting an institution whose core mission is to disseminate knowledge and educate people on the pristine path of Islam. He stressed that it is important to join efforts locally, regionally and worldwide to fully extirpate terrorism and extremism as they are a serious threat to world peace and security, underlying the principled stance the OIC takes of condemning terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

The OIC Secretary General extended sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, wishing speedy recovery to the wounded. He reaffirmed solidarity with Nigeria in its war against terrorism which is a threat to security and stability in Nigeria and the region as a whole.
