The Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Dr. Yousef A. Al-Othaimeen appealed and urged all the stakeholders in Gambia, to fully respect the outcome of the recent Presidential election. He confirmed that the OIC shares the position of other international and regional organizations which endorsed the results of the elections. He maintained that rejection of the election results will bring about instability in Gambia and will undermine the national unity.
The Secretary General also stated that the OIC will continue to support the joint efforts led by other international and regional organizations, in particular the mediation efforts led by the Chairperson of ECOWAS to preserve the legitimacy of election results and to facilitate the peaceful and orderly transition process.
The Secretary General reiterates his earlier statement on 4 December 2016, expressing satisfaction at the success of the Presidential elections in Gambia and congratulated the people that has proven through an intensive participation in the elections, their attachment to peaceful rotation of power within the framework of the constitutional institutions of the country.
He finally reiterated the continuing support of the OIC to Gambia, an important Member State, which is going to host the upcoming OIC Summit, in its efforts to consolidate democracy and advance the causes of peace and stability for the development of the country.
It is worth noting that OIC General Secretariat participated in the observation of the presidential election in Gambia, which took place on December 1st, 2016 and reported that the elections took place in accordance with the internationally recognized standards for fair elections in an atmosphere of democracy and transparency, popular participation and peaceful manner.
