The Preparatory Meetings of the 11th Islamic Conference of Information Ministers kick off in Jeddah

The preparatory meetings of the 11th Islamic Conference of Information Ministers in OIC Member States hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 19-22 December 2016 began in Jeddah on 19 December 2016.

The Opening session started with a welcome address by the representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Chair of the previous session, delivered by the Vice-Minister of Culture and Guidance in Iran, Muhammad Hussein Hashimi.

The Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Culture in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdulmohsen Alyasdelivered a statement in which he stated that the theme of the current session (Session of New Media to Counter Terrorism and Islamophobia) summarizes two important issues that require efforts to be made to utilize the potential of new media to counter terrorism and Islamophobia through action plans, implementation mechanisms and clear indicators that help address the greatest number of issues and problems facing the Muslim world.

Dr. Alyas indicated that the current session considers issues and resolutions that would help come up with a clear action plan to serve as a pillar for joint Islamic media action.

For her part, the representative of the OIC Secretary General, Mrs. Maha M. Aqeel, said that this session discusses 11 important draft resolutions on countering Islamophobia and ways and means to boost the media presence of the OIC and highlight its diverse work to the wide audience inside and outside Member States.

She added that the OIC prepared, in cooperation with Member States and OIC institutions, a media strategy to highlight its work in various political, economic, humanitarian and cultural domains, as well as the role of Member States in supporting OIC projects and programmes.

The agenda of the Conference includes the adoption of the media strategy to counter Islamophobia and its implementation mechanisms, empowering women in and through the media, in addition to the OIC’s media action both internally and externally, in partnership with media institutions from Member States and international media institutions.
