Memorandum signed between UNOSSC and OIC to strengthen South-South cooperation

The Secretary General of the OIC Mr. Iyad Ameen Madani received the Director of United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) Mr. Jorge Chediek at the OIC Headquarters in Jeddah on 24 January 2016.
The two sides reviewed the cooperation between OIC and UNOSSC in the various areas.
While recognizing that South-South cooperation serves as an important avenue for human and productive capacity-building, technical assistance and exchange of best practices among developing countries, the Secretary General underscored the importance OIC-wide South-South cooperation for the implementation of its socio-economic programmes.
On his part, Mr. Jorge Chediek confirmed the desire of UNOSSC to strengthen further cooperation with OIC, which is the largest South-South cooperation mechanism, in the light of the emerging dynamics of South-South cooperation.
On this occasion, a Memorandum of Cooperation between UNOSSC and Department of Economic Affairs of the General Secretariat to strengthen South-South cooperation was also concluded. On the basis of this Memorandum, a regular mechanism of cooperation between UNOSSC and Department of Economic Affairs of the General Secretariat will be created to execute, among others, joint projects and capacity building programmes in OIC Member States.
