OIC Secretary General Calls on CAR to Eschew Violence and Commit to the Democratic Process

Date: 14/12/2015

The Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has expressed its satisfaction over the referendum, which was held nationwide in the Central African Republic (CAR) ahead of the Presidential election scheduled on 27th December 2015. The Secretary General Iyad Ameen Madani commended the people of CAR for their resolve and commitment toward democracy and called on all parties and political stakeholders to refrain from acts of violence and show restraint during these important events, which will enable CAR populations to reconcile themselves and usher in durable peace and democracy. The Secretary General also deplored the unfortunate acts of violence, which took place in parts of Bangui resulting in several casualties, and urged all Central Africans to rise above sectarian divide by resolutely turning their back against disunity in favor of national dialogue, reconciliation and forgiveness as the only alternative to bring back lasting peace to their country. Mr. Madani expressed the hope that the upcoming elections will be held in a democratic, fair and transparent atmosphere and invited the international community to lend their full support to CAR in its efforts to restore democracy.
