The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, launched an urgent appeal to the OIC Member States to assist the Government of Tunisia to evacuate thousands of displaced people who have regained the Tunisian border (Ras Jdir) located on the border with the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya by providing transportation means such as planes and ships to transport them to their countries the soonest possible and to ease their humanitarian suffering. The OIC Secretary General had taken note of the first report of the OIC humanitarian delegation dispatched on a fact-finding mission in the Egyptian and Tunisian borders with Libya. The report revealed a deterioration of humanitarian conditions in the area which is in the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe as thousands of refugees from different nationalities amass on both sides of the border. The delegation informed the Secretary General of the request made by the Tunisian authorities to the Member States to assist in evacuating and transporting the displaced to their countries the soonest possible and alleviate the growing humanitarian crisis. In the same vein, the OIC Secretary General, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, launched contacts with the Member States to keep them abreast of the real situation in those areas. He urged them to quickly send the needed aids to contain the crisis and prevent its exacerbation.
