OIC Secretary General Appeals to Outgoing President of The Gambia to Ensure a Peaceful Handover of Power

Date: 16/01/2017

The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen, has issued an appeal to the outgoing President of the Islamic Republic of the Gambia, HE Yahya A.J.J Jammeh to ensure a smooth and peaceful transfer of power to his democratically elected successor, Mr. Adama Barrow, who is expected to take office as from January 19, 2017, in accordance with the Gambian constitution.

Dr. Othaimeen reminded the outgoing leader and his government of their responsibilities to protect the Gambian people. He urged them to exercise restraint and avoid any act capable of jeopardizing the peaceful swearing in process of the President-elect. He also called on them to remember the possible consequences of their actions.

The Secretary General, while recalling his recent message that was delivered to President Jammeh on January 9, 2017 in Banjul, reaffirmed the unequivocal support of the Organization for all the international endeavors led by ECOWAS, AU and UN towards resolving the electoral impasse. He pleaded with the current authorities not to miss the opportunities offered to them for a peaceful settlement of the crisis in the remaining few days ahead.
