Darfur: Backgrounder

Darfur is situated in the western part of the Republic of Sudan. Its size is estimated at half a million square kilometers, a fifth of the total area of the Republic of Sudan, which stretches over some 2,503,890 square kilometers. Darfur is bordered by three States, namely Libya on the north, Chad on the west, and the Central African Republic on the south-west. It is also adjacent to some other Sudanese States, such as Bahr al-Ghazal and Kordofan to the east. Administratively, Darfur is divided into three States, namely: the State of North Darfur whose capital is Al-Fashir, the State of South Darfur whose capital is Nyala, and the State of West Darfur whose capital is Al-Junainah.
