EXTRAORDINARY SESSION OF THE ISLAMIC CONFERENCE OF FOREIGN MINISTERS ON TERRORISM
1- The Extraordinary Session of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 18 to 20 Muharram 1423H (1-3 April 2002). It was attended by a number of Member States.
2- H.E. Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the Prime Minister of Malaysia opened the Conference and delivered a comprehensive speech in which he addressed the gravity of terrorism, the importance of defining it and the necessity of cooperation to combat it. He rejected linking terrorism with Islam or Muslims. He underlined resistance to foreign occupation as a legitimate act.
3- The first working session started its deliberations under the chairmanship of H.E. the Foreign Minister of Mali and Chairman of the Twenty-eighth Session of the Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers.
4- The Conference elected the Bureau as follows:
- Chairman .. Malaysia
- Vice-Chairmen .. The Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Republic of Senegal.
The State of Qatar.
The State of Palestine.
- Rapporteur .. The Republic of Mali.
5- Statements were delivered by H.E. the Chairman of the Conference, the Foreign Minister of Malaysia, H.E. the Foreign Minister of Qatar in his capacity as the representative of the Ninth Summit, followed by H.E. the Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
6- A number of Heads of Delegation took the floor. Their statements focused on terrorism, the importance of defining it, and specifying its concept; they also stressed that support should be given to the Palestinian people in its just struggle.
7- The Conference unanimously adopted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on International Terrorism. (Annex-1).
8- The Conference also unanimously adopted the Statement on the Situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. (Annex-2).
